Outline the importance of Confidentiality and Boundaries.
Confidentiality is crucial in Counselling. The entire relationship between the Counsellor and the client is one based on trust, and placing a limit on the degree of confidentiality will diminish the effectiveness of the counselling work.
This is why it is essential that the limits to confidentiality between counsellor and client is explained during the initial session. The client needs to be aware of several things:
Everything said during a counselling session may be confidential but is not everything is a secret.
Due to the law needing to be upheld, there is no guarantee of secrecy, although confidence and confidentiality are core factors in working with the client.
The client also needs to be made aware that “complete confidentiality” is non existent. Counsellors may be called on by a court to pass on secret information. Failure to do this may result in the counsellor being jailed for being in contempt of court.
It is essential that the client understands the limits to the confidentiality that can be offered by a counsellor, what information can be passed on, in what circumstances and to whom.
Boundaries are also an essential aspect of a client/ counsellor relationship. It is essential that the relationship between counsellor and client remains only a therapeutic one. The role of the counsellor is not to befriend the client, but to help them to the best of their abilities whilst always maintaining professional boundaries.
