Personality may be broadly defined as the unique world view and the way an individual views himself (self-concept) and others as a result of a unique set of experiences. The result of a unique set of experiences and different personality dynamics, people may well have similar personalities but two personalities cannot be exactly the same, in the same manner as DNA differs from one person to another.
The second component of personality is behavior. This behavior is directly linked to the unique experiences already mentioned. Furthermore, it is the only way in which researchers have been able to observe and later deduce a certain personality type, however subtle the gesture, the behavior. At this point, the reader must understand that the conclusions drawn out from studies on the topic can only be approximate just as even a father would find it impossible to fully understand the personality make-up of a child simply based through periodical observations which exclude a number of possibilities in which experiences may have been interpreted.
In relation to this, the purpose of this essay is therefore to draw the reader into an overview of the conclusions researchers have historically drawn on the subject. A critical analysis will be conducted on the various claims meaning that rational analysis and mainstream concepts will be used to evaluate the weaknesses and strengths of the frameworks developed overtime.
Graham R. Sturdy more accurately defines personality as the set of characteristics and behavioral variables which make up the unique mindset of a person, both in terms of how the person views him/herself and also other people and their world view. Interestingly, Mr. Sturdy goes on to define the concept using a ‘personality spectrum’ which ranges from one extreme to another of seven core personality traits.

The spectrum above shows that personality is analyzed using five basic dimensions which are extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability and openness to experience. Personality may only be defined using a spectrum since the exact variables which make up the personality of a person cannot be known simply because of their greatness in number, their variety and the fact that these components of personality are constantly evolving with time.
At this point, the job of the psychological detective is then to tie the personality map of an individual with predictable patterns of behavior in order to build a causality relationship which can be used to understand behavior or the personality ...
