Suggestions for the Healthy Development of Your Child
The study of human development begins at conception and ends at death. Between conception and death, it is genetic predispositions and the environment that shapes who an individual is at the conclusion of his or her life. For the purposes of this essay, this writer will assume the role of a developmental psychologist and advise a six-month pregnant woman and a postpartum woman on daily activities that would be beneficial to their child’s development. Further, this essay will provide an explanation of how each activity is beneficial from the perspective of the developmental theory.

For a postpartum woman this writer recommends that she perform the following three activities daily. First, she should breast feed. Studies indicate that breast-fed newborns have higher cognitive development compared to newborns who receive formula (Clark, Castillo, Calatroni, Walter, Cayazzo, Pino, & Lozoff, 2006). Second, she should talk to another woman who has had a baby and share any worries and concerns she may possess. Postpartum mothers, especially new mothers tend to exhibit high levels of anxiety over caring for their babies. If this stress continues to build, ...
