Abstract
Business management practices in the international level are a complex matter, but can be a source of competitive advantage for an organization that does it accordingly. The main critical aspect that underlies the complexity is cultural differences across nations. Therefore, a successful international business knows and applies practices that reflect and address these cultural differences. For example, the management has to consider the role of culture in the application of employee motivational strategies, as well as, the use of appropriate promotional and advertisement messages and strategies, among other practices. An analysis of literature on the role of culture in international management with the use of individualism-collectivism dimension reveals that a society’s cultural values affect individual attitudes, which, in turn, affects the strategies that the management of an organization has to adopt to be successful in that local environment. The work of managers is to ensure their organization adequately and appropriately applies different strategies in different environments appropriately, for efficiency and effectiveness.







Introduction
In the context of globalization, cultural differences play a critical role for business success. This is because globalization takes into account the management of people immensely. The executive of a company needs to cope with issues of alien cultures, attitudes, languages, unfamiliar laws, competitors, practices, and work ethics, among other issues. Therefore, management functions like hiring, maintaining, remunerating, advertising, branding, and promotion, among others, have to consider the role of culture for the business operations to be successful. In addition, the management has to be proactive and flexible with respect to cultural differences. The underlying reason for success is to adopt appropriate strategies, which assist the best-qualified people, in the execution of company strategy on a global scale. This can enable the management provide competitive advantage to the company (Barett et al. 2004; Iguisi, 2009; Fey, 2005).
Culture determines individual and group differences across different regions. By definition, culture refers to a set of shared values, norms, and beliefs in a society. The current generations learns their cultural values from earlier generations, and will pass them on to future generations. In essence, culture imposes constraints on social norms, as well as, economic behaviors such as basic attitudes towards materialism, work, and change, among other behaviors. Consequently, the culture influences individuals’ attitudes and their expectations with respect to the group and work relations that, in turn, determine the appropriate strategies that an organization needs to adopt to ensure success (Gorodnichenko and Roland, 2011; Lloyd and Hartel, 2010).
