Demonstrative communication concentrates on nonverbal and unwritten types of communication. Demonstrative communication is a method of sending and receiving messages by articulating nonverbal information through various types’ unspoken actions. There are two parties of demonstrative communication, the sender and receiver of the message. The sender provides information and the receiver obtains or absorbs the information. Demonstrative communication includes body language, facial expressions, eye contact, and tone of voice. Demonstrative communication also involves the process of obtaining information through listening and responding.
Positive and Negative Demonstrative Communication
A handshake is an example of how demonstrative communication through body language can be both positive and negative. A malleable handshake can be seen as a weakness in a person whereas a burly handshake can depict the sender as being very domineering. A solid handshake can communicate to the receiver that the sender is confident and considerate. Another area is in which body language can be positive or negative is the way someone is holding his or her body posture. Looking at the floor and slouching shoulders can suggest that the person is uncertain of his or her abilities or is shy. If the person is sitting straight up and has his or her body positioned towards information that is given can suggest confidence and willingness.
Facial expressions can also have positive and negative effects with regard to communication. Facial expressions can suggest fright, joyfulness, melancholy, anger, and other different emotions. An example of a negative facial expression is if a sender always looks as if he or she is angry. When a receiver looks at this facial expression, he or she would assume that the person is not welcoming or is mean. Another example of a positive and negative facial expression is smiling. A genuine smile from the sender can allow the receiver to be relaxed and comfortable. A receiver or sender can feel as though the other is pleasing and benevolent. A fake smile from the sender or receiver can be interpreted by the other as being deceitful, uncomfortable, or dishonest.
Ineffective and Effective Demonstrative Communication
Ineffective communication happens when a sender of information is not proficient in communicating a comprehensible and concise message. Demonstrative communication is also ineffective if the receiver is not retaining or understating the information being provided by the sender. An example of ineffective communication by the sender and receiver is crossing of the arms, not focusing on each other, or not making eye contact. Ineffective demonstrative communication can lead to obtaining wrong information and doubt amongst the sender and receiver.
