This essay will discuss Maslow’s motivational theory of leadership and management and how these can affect an organization and the people within. It will also provide in-depth discussion of the theory related to leadership and management and concluding with personal experience as a manager in an early years Setting.
Motivation is defined as “a decision-making process, through which the individual chooses the desired outcome and sets in motion the behavior appropriate to them” Buchanan and Huczynski (1997). Motivation can therefore be thought of as the degree to which an individual wants and chooses to engage in certain behaviours. For examples, you choose to study to earn a qualification therefore you put in every effort to achieve your goal.
Motivation according to Kreitner, (195) is the psychological process that gives behavior purpose and direction. It is the internal drive to accomplish a particular goal in a work setting, motivation is what makes people want to work.
Abraham Maslow (1943-1954) developed his “Hierarchy of Needs” motivation theory. support provided by early years settings both large and small, is dependent upon qualification, skills, experience and attitudes of all the individuals who make up the childcare team. Leading and managing this team effectively brings out the best in everyone and leads to good outcomes for children, parents and staff.
It can be argued that the best organization has the best motivated workers and this is important because well motivated employees are usually characterised by higher productivity than poorly motivated employees.
Therefore the best leaders and managers are the driving force in taking an organization forward for ensuring that a strong commitment to high standards in all aspects of the work of the organization. Leadership involves setting the vision ...
