Learning process is greatly associated with the way people behave or act in response to any stimuli. Behaviour acts as the ultimate importance in dealing with the learning process. According to Santrock (2011), behaviourism is defined as a relatively permanent change in the behaviour of an individual based on his or her experiences or discoveries. The founder of this theory is John B. Watson but later further constructed by Ivan Pavlov, John Thorndike and B. F. Skinner. The teacher of the English language lesson that I have observed, Miss Tasneem, has obviously used this theory throughout the teaching and learning process of the Year 4 Mutiara.
Miss Tasneem begins the lesson by throwing questions to the pupils regarding the way of constructing correct sentences. She keeps on asking the pupils to ensure that they recall what they have learnt in the previous lesson. In a way, she is encouraging her pupils to make connections between their prior knowledge and the new situations. For example, she will ask “Verb, subject and object, which one comes first?”. The pupils have learnt about verbs, nouns and pronouns, thus, Miss Tasneem is encouraging them to relate what they have learnt in the lesson of constructing sentences. This is in line with the concept of behaviourism where learning occurs whenever a person is able to make connections between his or her previous knowledge with the new learning process (Mok Soon Sang, 2008).
Besides, Miss Tasneem uses mostly drills and practices while teaching the pupils on how to construct sentences. Drill and practice is a behaviourist aligned technique in which students are given the same materials repeatedly until mastery is achieved. The pupils are given a flash card that they have to share among the two of them and from the flash card, they are asked to construct five sentences which are grammatically correct following the formula in constructing sentences. Continuous writing practices are given to the pupils throughout the learning process. Sammons (2010) states that drill and practice strengthen the exhibition of desired behaviour. In order to make pupils master the correct way to construct sentences, Miss Tasneem keeps on giving them practices to reduce the mistakes done by the pupils.
Mergel (1999) declares that behaviourism focuses on a new behavioural pattern being repeated until it becomes automatic. Reinforcement by way of repetition is also greatly used by the teacher during the English language lesson. The teacher asks the pupils to repeat after her when pupils are making mistakes in pronouncing certain words while reading the sentences.
