Description

Technologies have been dramatically shaping societies since the second half of the twentieth century. Humans have changed technologies or have been changed by them. Discard the power of technology would be to disregard the way in how we predict or see the future, new technologies have emerged and partly have been dictating our lifestyle affecting us in one way or another. An investigation into new technologies has been made. 1 Introduction

After the discovery of the Internet, Cloud Computing promises to shape our society to the point that there may be a period before and after the Cloud Computing, however our investigation focused on the impact of this emerging technology on businesses and society, questions arise and will be subject of analysis on this report.
2 What is Cloud Computing?

Cloud computing is developing faster than ever, because of the internet, we now have, virtually, unlimited access to information, and the possibility of staying connected to the world 24-7.
The Internet is one of the biggest revolutions in computing technology, opening doors to new possibilities, and one of them is being considered as the new revolutionary step, the cloud computing.

Cloud computing is the storage of data only in servers, which can be accessed anywhere in the world, at any time by merely having access to internet. Computers could work without installing programs, using just input devices like keyboards and mouse’s and output devices like monitors, not requiring installation services and data storage. Since all data are available on a network, forming a cloud interconnected, any electronic device can interact with that data, making it much more useful and intelligent than the ones we have today.
Computing involves delivering hosted services over the Internet as represented on figure 1 and is divided into three categories: [1] Infrastructure-as-a-Service known as (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service known as (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service known as (SaaS).

Figure 1: Cloud Computing [4]

Cloud Software as a Service (SaaS) - provide applications to the users that could be run on a cloud infrastructure. The applications are accessible from various client devices through a thin client interface such as a web browser (e.g., web-based email).
Cloud Platform as a Service (Peas) - Deploy onto the cloud infrastructure consumer-created or acquired applications created using programming languages and tools supported by the provider.
Cloud Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) - Provide to the consumer storage capabilities, provision processing, networks, and other fundamental computing resources where the consumer is able to deploy and run arbitrary software, which can include operating systems and applications.

2.1 The impact of Cloud computing on business

The impact of cloud computing on businesses and end users will be significant. Companies will no longer need to invest in up-front equipment, but will rent computing power and storage from external providers and pay only for their use, as they do today with utilities thus reducing costs and reducing carbon-footstep thus becoming more eco friendly. According to Dion Hinchcliffe [5] cloud computing in businesses will create a new generation of products and services and new industries will arise.
