SHOULD NUCLEAR ENERGY BE REPLACED BY OTHER ALTERNATIVE ENERGIES?

The recent tsunami disaster in Japan destroyed some of the Fukushima nuclear power plants. As a result, radioactive materials entered the environment and badly damaged the local environment, the radioactive materials detected in agriculture products and drinking water also caused some health problems. Now the Fukushima area is a no-go area and evacuees may never return to homes. Is nuclear power still the answer to the energy crisis? According to Jones (2011), nuclear energy is the most effective resource to generate power. There are, however, other alternative energies to replace nuclear energy to deal with the energy crisis.

The first reason why alternative energies should replace nuclear energy to deal with energy crisis is because nuclear energy will result in disaster if proper precautions are not taken. The waste produced by the nuclear power plants can be very dangerous to the environment and human health, it contains radioactive materials. Moreover, the radioactive materials need a long period of time to reduce and it can affect the local environment for thousands of years. Therefore, nuclear power plants need professional experts to hand and the waste after fission reactions must be kept away from the environment. For example, the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 in Ukraine is considered to be the worst nuclear power plant disaster in history, as one of the reactors exploded and released high amount of radioactive materials in the environment. “An estimated 100,000 people currently [lived] in areas contaminated by the Chernobyl nuclear accident and an estimated 600,000 have been exposed to high levels of radiation since the disaster occurred” (Beach, 2011). Although twenty five years have passed after the Chernobyl disaster occurred, it has a very profound effect on local environment and human beings: large areas of Ukraine and its surroundings have been contaminated, many animals died and people who lived near that area is more likely to have cancer or reproductive problems, even their offspring will be affected. As a result, people nowadays are looking for other alternative energies to solve energy crisis. One of them is wind energy, wind energy have many advantages: wind can be found in all parties of the world and it is a kind of never ending resource, so that it can be used in many countries. The turbines for wind generating power cost low and it is easy to install when compared with nuclear power plants. Most importantly, when use wind to generate electricity, it does not release any harmful pollutions or gas to the atmosphere. It has been argued (Goodland, 1995) that China could triple its electricity production if the potential of wind energy is fully explored. This is one of the reasons ...
