Psychological Expectations
Executive Summary
The purpose of this report is to address a HRM issue I recently experienced in my job, which lead to a violation of the psychological contract. My report expands on the consequences of a breach of the psychological contract for both the employer and employee. Theories such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, Guest (UK) and Frederic Hertzberg’s Hygiene factors are used to help understand the situation and also to highlight practical solutions to the issue covered in this report.

Problem Analysis and Solution
1.1 A description of the HRM work related problem encountered
I interviewed for my current position six months ago. The job description stated that the successful applicant would be offered a challenging, versatile and rewarding career, and that the successful candidate would be offered development opportunities. I was at a point in my career where I felt ready to take on a professional challenge; therefore, I applied for the position. I interviewed successfully and was offered the position. At the time I was offered the position, I was given the impression I was taking on a challenge, which is exactly what I wanted. After five month of working in the position, I am feeling de-motivated and frustrated at the lack of variety, challenge, fulfilment and stimulation within the role. Basically, my expectations with regard to job versatility, challenge, fulfilment and development have not been met, causing me to seriously question the sincerity of my line manager and supervisor.

1.2 An Analysis of the Problem
This report focuses on the concept of Employee Expectations and the Psychological Contract in (Session 1.3 of Book 2, An Introduction to Human Resource Management in Business). The objective of this report is to analyse the situation set out in section 1.1 above by means of the Psychological Contract.

The Psychological Contract is a non verbal or unwritten contract that develops psychologically between two people who are expecting a reward or recognition towards their actions/efforts (employee and employer).The psychological contract is unique in that no formal contract is entered into verbally or in writing.

Breach of the psychological contract occurs when either employee or employer fails to meet the expectations or hopes of the other. Breach of the psychological contract could have significant consequences for the employee, such as loss of interest in their jobs or underperformance within ...
