Information Processing Systems


Communication channels
In every organization, information flows backward, forwards and sideways and the flow of these information is called communication. And the way through which these information flows in the organization and with other organizations is called communication channels. According to the Schramm, W, (1954), “Communication channels are the medium through which people in an organization communicate. There should be a clear direction of channels to complete various task, because using an incorrect channel of communication for a task can result negative. For a complex massage a channel of communication needs to be richer so that maximum clarity is ensured”.

In order to determine easier task within the organization, communication channels are very important.Communication channels can be categorized into three main groups; Formal, Informal and Unofficial communication channels.











Formal Communication Channels:
The massages of formal communication within the organization followthe chain of command of the organization. Formal communication can be both Written or Oral. Formal communication flows from manager to his subordinates. There is a hierarchical structure to flow the information, here subordinates get informed about any announcement of the organization from middle management, sometimes formal communication come through from lower level as well but to be considered formal, the communication still must pass through middle management. Getting massages, each recipient than re-transmits the massages in a selected form of media to the lower level of employees and the massages flows until everyone get to know who need it. Schramm, W. In formal communication, massage contains organization’s goals, policies, instructions, memoranda, scheduled meeting and reports etc. Forexample a company’s newsletter which is given to the both employees and clients explaining company’s goals, visions and a clear idea.




Informal Communication Channels:
No organization operates fully following formal communication channels. There is always informal communication found within the organization even some organizations have strict organizational hierarchy for communication. Web hierarchical communication don’t work efficiently though it is needed to maintain discipline of the organization, it is time consuming that is why sometimes managers and others employees communicate in informal way of communication channels.
