As the certain stage og economic development, globalization is becoming more and more popular. There are so many multinational businesses all around the world which lead to challenges for cross boarder managers in the twenty—first century. They should be continuously monitoring the environmenral variables in the countries involved, especially those that may have a significant positive or negative impact. Four catagories of elements of cross boarder managers’ environment are: economic, legal, political and cultural. And the last one makes most challenges as it is largely invisible. The influence of culture is difficult to detect and managers often overlook it. Managers often demonstrate cultural blindness. Culture affects the goals of the institutions of society, the way the institutions operate, and the attributions their members make for policies and behavior(Schwartz, 1992). So to develop cross cultural capabilities is very important for cross boarder managers in the 21 st century. Then I will elaborate it in the following five aspects.
The first one is “ The nature and meaning of culture and the cultural dimensions”.
As generally understood, the culture of a society comprises the shared values, understandings assumptions, and goals that are learned from earlier generations, imposed by present members of a society and passed on to succeeding generations. There are two ways to definite culture: One of them is a broad sense placed under the sociological perspective: Culture is seen as a particular society with a whole way of life. Such as the so-called Indian culture, Arab culture, Mayan culture. The second definition refers to a narrow way to the national spirit and character (ethos) as the core definition belonging to the the value form.
The nature of culture: 1, Culture as shared: Culture is something shared by members of a particular group. 2,Culture as learned: Culture is transmitted through the process of learning and interacting with the environment. 3,Culture as Systematic and Organized: Cultures are integrated coherent logical systems, the parts of which are interrelated.
Besides, culture has three features: 1, Heterogeneity is the essence of cultural property. 2, Cultural diversity is the basic way of culture’s existence. 3, The third feature is culture’s cultivation.
Cultural Dimensions: Hofstede's five cultural scales is an effective architecture used to measure cultural differences in different countries and value orientation.They are: Power distance, Individualism and collectivism, Masculinity and femininity, Uncertainty Avoidance, and Long-term orientation and short-term orientation.Here I will focus on the first two ones.
