Life in 1930’s America
The Great Depression in the 1930’s America effected farms and its workers. One of the reasons for the Great Depression was the stock market crash on October 29 1929. This was followed by droughts and world war one did not help either. Farms found this particularly difficult because the droughts and stock market crash meant a lack in income, meaning farm owners had to make people redundant living them without jobs. The lack of food coming from farms led to rise in prises in supermarkets and redundancies there too. During the Great Depression people had to move from place to place to find work. More and more people had to go to free food centres and sleep on the streets.
The Great Depression led to ‘The American Dream’ which was owning your own land and having a farm and stable income. President Kennedy’s opinion of this was that all Americans should be optimistic and believe they will make it.
Because of the lack of jobs, people, mainly ex-farm workers, became migrant workers because they had no money or family. Most migrant workers travelled alone and don’t really belong anywhere. The conditions on ranches were very poor. An example of this is the workers would sleep on the floor with no covers or cushions. The workers would only stop work to eat or sleep meaning they would be exhausted.
A disabled person in the 1930’s would be put in an asylum and were discriminated against. In the 1930’s it was ok to call disabled people names like:
They were put straitjackets, shackles and hand cuffs and tortured or left to die. There was no care given, unlike the hospitals today.
At the end of the 1930’s World War 2 broke out and this then gave jobs to lots of the unemployed. Unemployment goes to 0. The war is in some ways a relief to the Americans, giving those jobs, money and hope for their families.
Overall 1930’s America wasn’t a nice place to be because of lack of food, money and jobs. Unemployment was high. The droughts affected the water supplies and the crops. People tried to get board games and play parlor games or get money to take their children to a movie or theatre to stop them being bored. The collapse of the economy also made this a bad time. At the end of the 1930’s World War 2 broke out and this then gave jobs to lots of the un employed. Unemployment goes to 0. The war is in some ways a relief to the Americans
