Is University education necessary for success in life?
University education is the study beyond secondary education. Unlike primary and secondary education, a wider range of courses such as psychology, engineering and medicine are offered to students. In recent years, it has been argued that University education is not necessary for success in life due to technological advancements. This essay will elucidate why University education is necessary for success in life. Factors such as unequivocal job prospects, the opportunity to develop a strong social circle and developing independent thinking all are reasons in why Universities are necessary for success in life.
University graduates have unequivocal job prospects compared to those without degrees. University study provides opportunities individuals to develop skills necessary for the workplace. Skills such as team working skills, time allocation and negotiation skills are all emphasized in universities through group work. Unlike secondary education, the focuses on these skills are much more accentuated. This can be seen, as University graduates are more likely to be hired. This trend can be seen from statistics collected from Canada’s Labor Force Survey. Despite the economic recession, the employment rate for University graduates have increased by 15% between May 2008 and 2012 (O'Heron, 2012)The increase in employment despite the economic recession fortifies the fact that University degrees is a valuable investment. Apart from increased job opportunities, studies have shown there is a significant income gap from University graduates and High school graduates. According to the Boudarbat, Lemieux and Riddell study, a male bachelor’s graduate is expected to earn 50% more income compared to a High School male graduate (O'Heron, 2012) University education is necessary for success as it enables individuals to find a job with good pay. One’s life cannot be successful if he or she cannot find a proper job with adequate pay. Some may argue that successful people such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerburg and Steve Jobs were all university dropouts but still managed to become billionaires. What these people fail to realize is these are all individual incidents, meaning it is not applicable to everyone.
Universities facilitate the development of social circles and bonds between individuals. Since a major focus of university is about working with people with the same interest, it can be said that Universities act as a bridge connecting individuals together. Students studying in University will have the chance to meet people with similar interest and goals. This can be yielding, as the bonding could prove effective when these circles eventually move out of the University. Connecting people with similar interest and goals in specific streams would create a network for support between different individuals when they eventually emerge to the working world.
