INTRODUCTION

In this assignment I am going to carry out and report an investigation of the operations needed to ensure that a laboratory functions effectively and continuously, and how the technician carries out these operations and to do that I will cover the procedures below.

Procedures: stock control, waste control, servicing e.g. servicing dates, service contracts, waste management dates, laboratory maintenance records, receipt / disposal of goods, housekeeping, maintenance and storage.

Safe working practices: working under supervision, hazard recognition, safety awareness, risk assessment, accident procedures, incident procedures, fire precautions, storage, used of fume cupboards.

Law: Health and safety at work Act, codes o practices, local laboratory rules, Customs and Excise, legislation, e.g. toxic and flammable substances, radiation sources, microbiological hazards.

Stock control

Stock records: All stock brought in the laboratory are recorded and copied by receipt and all relevant information is kept within the databases so that they know when they will run out. According to COSHH regulations the stock should be kept in safe places.

Waste control
Even when not required by regulations, the following best practices are recommended.
 Retain records of analytical data that is used in making waste determinations for a minimum of three years, keep these files in an organised manner so they are easy to find and Make sure containers are properly labelled. Labels should include name of the chemical, hazards and precautions required. Do not reuse containers without relabelling the exterior and defacing the old label.
Waste disposal: Disposal of goods:
The laboratory waste should be put in the yellow sacks and the office waste should be put into black sacks Broken glass should be put into Glass Cardboard boxes also the sharps (e.g. needles, scalpel blades etc) should be put in the cabinets.

Servicing

Work schedules: There should be a database work schedules for all the employees and their responsibilities.

Finance accounts: There should be a database for all the income and out come money which has a record of all the finance accounts
