SHOULD EUTHANASIA BE LEGALIZED? DISCUSS

Euthanasia is a deliberate intervention undertaken with the express intention of ending a life to relieve intractable suffering. It has always been a widely controversial topic and it will be one. The controversy has been sparked by the various opinions and views of people about this particular act. For instance, many religions such as Christianity have strongly opposing views on euthanasia, claiming that humans do not have the right to end one's life whereas, others beg to differ. I believe that euthanasia should be legalized.

Euthanasia can be categorized into two forms, active and passive. Passive euthanasia entails the withholding of common treatments such as chemotherapy or the distribution of medications such as morphine to relieve pain, knowing that it may also result in death. This form of euthanasia is widely accepted and used in hospitals all around the world. Therefore, the controversy lies in the act of active euthanasia.

Active euthanasia entails the use of lethal substances or forces to kill. The main purpose of this, which is to kill, is what makes this highly controversial. However, sometimes such a "controversial" act has to be done because of reasons such as considering the rights of the person. This applies especially in instances where a person has previously signed a contract stating that if a fatal mishap such as terminal illnesses and accidents should happen to them, they be allowed to receive euthanasia. Forbidding this would be violation of people's freedom. Moreover, if it is not allowed, the patients have to suffer through unnecessary physical and emotional pain such as losing their independence, while fully knowing that they will eventually die. This is why i believe that euthanasia should be legalized as people should have the rights and freedom to choose what they want.

Another reason as to why euthanasia should be legalized is due to the high economic cost and the human resources required taking care of the terminally ill patients. The energy of doctors and hospital beds can be put to better use such as catering to the needs of other patients suffering from curable ailments rather than to cater to the needs of terminally ill patients. This increases the general quality of care and it also shortens hospital waiting lists which will allow doctors to concentrate on patients who need their help more. Thus, I believe that euthanasia should be allowed as it will not only result in better medical services but also optimal usage of resources.

However, legalizing euthanasia also has its own respective drawbacks such as the great pressure the patients are constantly put under to consent to euthanasia. This is because majority of the patients feel like they are a burden to their family ...
