There are for main types of interviews; Structured, Unstructured, Semi-Structured and Group Interviews. This type of method is usually conducted face to face, but the first three can also be done over the telephone. Interviews and Focus groups are useful because it is a method that helps gain the understanding if family factors and education are a significant influence on young women and their participation in work. Focus groups allow for debate and discussion on the topic whilst using Interviews it allows the interviewee to gain a good rapport with the respondent, which are useful as it is a topic which can be controversial and somewhat personal; through these methods the interviewees are more likely to relax as they can be secured because they are with friends in their focus groups and in the interviews, the interviewer does not need to be present during the Interview. This means their findings would be more valid. This is also shown in the study made by Pamela Davies in 2000 when she interviewed females. However, since this is a sensitive Issue the methods could be quite interviewer bias meaning that questions are laced to influence respondents in such a way that it distorts the outcome of the interview. This makes the findings less Reliable Depth of qualitative information may be difficult to analyse.
Another Advantage of using Focus Groups and Interviews is that it allows the researcher gain both qualitative and quantitative data. Intepritivists likes this as well. And since it’s a type of method that can be accessed through a computer, it is easy to record the interview. In the Study of Angela Dale in 2002, she used individual interviews and focus groups to study Pakistani and Bangladeshi women. She used UCAS as the gate keeper to gain access on the rate of applicant to higher education from Pakistani and Bangladeshi. Using Focus groups, it was easy for her to interview people in secondary school ages ranging from 14-21, thus it is easier for younger people to talk about a sensitive issue making speak freely. Also Using Individual interviews as well made it easier to ask older women of different stages and professions in life. And since Angela Dale was female, it raised the rapport between her and the respondents thus raising its Validity. Especially since the interviewers shared the cultural background of the participants. However, again this research would be subjected to interviewer bias and the similarities to the participants cultural backgrounds would lead to a result in Over Rapport as well as some cultural differences would lack understanding ...
