In an attempt of comparison of the two religions of Islam and Christianity I will describe the basis of a monotheistic religion. As these religions belong to this category, it will be assumed that this is a commonality between them. The implications on other areas of the religion will be considered and the implications with regard to prophets in Islam and Jesus being God in Christianity will be mentioned. The difficultly lies in discerning what different families of Religions have in common. Historically speaking, the religion has to come from the same geographical location and the protagonist needs to be the same character. It is the position of the character in this essay which is of particular relevance. In Christianity, Jesus takes the uppermost place as a human form of God, whereas Islamic teaching depicts Muhammad as the greatest of all prophets, regarding him even greater than Jesus. The overall tendency is to stipulate that due to the differences between beliefs between these two religions, it is not absurd to say that they do not belong to the same family as such.
In order to establish the extent to which these three religions belong to the same family, firstly the religious texts of each will be examined. The Qur’an when speaking of the nature of God echoes that of the Christian faith.
“ He knew then, and He knows now, how the human story will end, since He is, as it were, the creator-narrator of History.
