Book VI of Plato’s Republic starting at 502D begins with Socrates discussion what qualities a true philosopher possesses. According to Socrates the intellectual abilities of philosophers include “ease of learning, good memory, quick wits, smartness, youthful passion, high-mindedness, and all other things that go along.”(503C) The difficult of a true philosopher is finding these gifts all together that stable and choose an orderly life. Those with quick wits choose to take advantage of this in search of personal gains in wealth and power. As well as those who are stable enough to seek the Good, instead of personal gain, aren’t intellectually nimble enough to learn and instead would rather sleep as Socrates says.
After discussing the attributes of a true philosopher and what they are tested in the question arises of what is the most important subjects. In a long-winded questioning Socrates finally reveals what is the most important subject, the Idea of Form of the Good. Rather quickly Socrates telling of the misconceptions of what people believe the Good to be. According to Socrates the majority believe that pleasure is the Good. The issue with this idea is that there are both admittedly good and bad pleasures. Then also the more sophisticated believe that knowledge is the Good. This posses a problem that they know what the knowledge of the Good is which they actually don’t and instead just call it the knowledge of the “good” not understanding what is meant by the word Good. These are just a couple examples of what Socrates says there are many controversies about the Idea of the Good. Many people form their opinions on with they belief as the good while this isn’t the good but only the appearances they see of the good. This displays the problem of a sufficient definition of the word good.
Socrates then is asked by Glaucon to finish and tell them what then the Good is and responds that even he cannot know what the Good is and it would be ridiculous for him to try. He then proposes an idea that he considers to be the offspring of what the Good is. Socrates then goes of to explain what is known as the theory of Forms. This brings in the idea of Being and how one experiences things. Everything that we consider true, beautiful, and good in our experience is visible and not intelligible while the “ness” or form of that thing is intelligible and not visible.
