History of Sigma Pi Phi and The Elite 8
Sigma pi phi originated in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 15, 1904. It’s the first fraternity in history’s calendar for Negro Americans who were college and professionally educated. Grand Sire Archon Henry McKee Minton was of the founders and leading figure in the making of the fraternity. Minton spent time contemplating the isolation in which accomplished black men lived and worked. Sigma Pi phi was also founded by Dr. Algernon B. Jackson, Dr. Edwin C. Howard and Dr. Richard J. Warnick,
Membership to Sigma Pi Phi has always been highly exclusive, numbering in about 5000 members. The organization is known as “The Boule” which means a council of nobleman. Boule is from the ancient Greek word describing the nobles appointed by the emperors to run daily affairs of Athenian cities. Some cities that were under the Boules advisement were Sparta, Macedonia, Epirus, and Corinth. Sigma Pi Phi was fashioned after Yale University Skull and Bones fraternity. Skull and Bones has held membership to many of the United States Presidents and leading senators. The Boules decided to emulate this by taking pride in having provided leadership and service to Black Americans during the Great Depression, World War 1 and 2, and The Civil Rights Movement. Founded as an organization for professionals, Sigma Pi Phi never established college chapters, and eliminated undergraduate membership during its infant stages
However, Sigma Pi Phi has historically had a congenial relationship with The Great 8, as many members of Sigma Pi Phi are members of The Elite 8. Sigma Pi Phi founder. Grand Sire Archon Henry McKee Minton and W.E.B Du Bois were members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and Sigma Pi Phi. Arthur Ashe were a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and Sigma Pi Phi. Vernon Eulion Jordan, Jr and Lawrence Douglas Wilder are members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and Sigma Pi Phi. James Weldon Johnson was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. and Sigma Pi Phi. The Great 8 Fraternity and Sororities got there rituals and system from Freemasonry. In Addition, Sigma Pi Phi is also close to The Elite 8 because they were the leading organizations from World War 1 to present amongst African Americans.
Sigma Pi Phi is also open to members of all races, as can be demonstrated by its well-known Jewish member Jack Greenberg who succeeded Thurgood Marshall as General Counsel of the NAACP. The Fraternity looks for men of prestige and professional success. Today The ...
