Mary Shelley was born in 1917 and was the daughter of two radical thinkers: William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft. Both of her parents were deeply interested in political and social reforms. Her mother was a feminist who died just eight days after giving birth to Mary. In 1814 Mary eloped with the poet Shelley, who at the time was married to Harriet Westbrook. He then married Mary in 1816, after Harriet drowned herself in the serpentine. Mary Shelley wrote her gothic novel ’Frankenstein’ in 1816 whilst staying in a villa near lake Geneva with Shelley, Bryon, Clair Clairmont and Polidori. She was inspired to write ‘Frankenstein’ when involved in a ghost-story competition. The novel is about a young Swiss student who discovers the secret of animating lifeless matter and, by assembling body parts, creates a monster who vows revenge on his creator after being rejected from society. The story shows how the way which society behaves and thinks can influence people’s behaviour, and in introducing the idea of a division within the mind Shelley creates a horror story that focuses on the evil within us. In the time that ‘Frankenstein’ was published there was a lot of political and social unrest , which would have influenced the way that Shelley wrote her novel.

During the creature’s narrative we learn about how he is educated through Lockean processes of sensation and reflection, observation of the behaviour and family relationship’s of the De Lacey’s, and through reading. The first book the creature learns from is ’The ruins, or meditations on the revolutions of empires’, written in 1791, which he hears read aloud by Felix as a part of Safie’s education. Through hearing this book the creature learns about good and evil and how these together can cause disaster when combined with power, and this expands his understanding on the human condition. The creature responds to this novel as an insight to knowledge of the world. ‘Through this work I obtained a cursory knowledge of history and a view of the several… nations of the earth’. This inspires him with strange feelings. The second book he learns from is ‘The Sorrows of Young Werter’, written in 1774, that the creature read to himself. This is a love story about Young Werter who is idealistic, dreamy and sensitive and falls in love with a young women who does not return his love, and marries another. This upsets him so much, that the frustration and anguish results in Werter killing himself. From this story the creature felt that he could relate to the book. ‘I applied much personally to my ...
