“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever…” These are the words of Mahatma Gandhi in order to express the main theme of The Dead Poets Society, directed by Peter Weir who illustrates the moral, “Carpe Diem” which means to seize the day, or to do things when life gives us the opportunity to do it, at that time. The Director expresses this theme of the movie by film making techniques such as camera angle, light effects, music and sound effects.
Through the effective use of camera angle the director shows the viewers the development of the theme of “Carpe Diem” from the point of view of the students. At the beginning of the movie, the camera angle is from the student’s view. When Mr. Keating stands up on his desk to tell them that they should look at things from different angles, the camera is positioned from the ground level looking up at Mr. Keating. Later on, in the end of the movie, the students stand on their desks looking down at Mr. Keating and the camera is shot from above. This shows that the students have improved and are now seeing the world in the way Mr. Keating wanted them to see it. Therefore, the camera angle clearly supports the development of the plot.
Furthermore, through the effective use of light effects, the director shows the viewer the risks of seizing the day or following the idea of “Carpe Diem”. When the students are sneaking out of the school, the moonlight from outside is projecting their moving shadows onto the ceiling, which creates a frightening sense. Another example is when the students are running into the woods. They are surrounded by fog and as they go further into the woods, until they disappear. It seems as though the fog has swallowed them. The viewer can tell that the students might have to face dangerous consequences from seizing the day.
In addition, through the effective use of musical effects, the director clearly expresses the theme of “Carpe Diem”. Some music in the movie, like the music that’s played in the morning at sunrise, is very traditional and it expresses the conservative side of the society. The expectations of the parents are that the students will be traditional, just like them. By the end of the movie, however, the music becomes more aggressive. When Mr. Keating is leaving the school, the music grows more aggressive and shows that the idea of Carpe Diem has been triggered in the students.
