Art of War, a book by Sun Tzu, is composed of 13 chapters detailing the strategies of a leader in winning a war. Though the book was written for the battlefield but its lesson is used beyond its military tactics but is now used a reference by most decision makers in the business world.

The book stresses the importance in knowledge and planning. In the first chapter, “Laying Plans”, Sun Tzu uses the five factors namely; (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth; (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline. These five laws must be learned and applied by a leader and as interpreted by Lionel Giles “he who knows them will not fail”. The Moral Law strengthens loyalty among subordinates. The heaven and earth can be interpreted as the external environment that of his competition and of his own. Commander are reminds the core virtues that must be instilled by every leader, which can be related to the five cardinal virtues of the Chinese of humanity, uprightness of mind, self-control, wisdom and sincerity or good faith. Method and discipline are the ways and means that the leader employs to maintain train his subordinates, may it be marketing strategies and even financial management

The second chapter “Waging the War”, details the actual war zone its effects to the subordinates and its existing resources. In the book, it cited that “no instance of a country having benefited from prolong warfare”. A war is not only a battle of strengths but also a battle of resources, the more resources gives the better advantage however is not an assurance of winning. Thus every leader is faced with the challenge of how to efficiently use limited resources to achieve a goal. This can be associated in the fields of marketing especially in promotions, this type of strategy is for a short period an extension of which is too costly and can be easily overshadowed by a better strategy by the competition.

The third chapter “Attack by Strategem/ The plan of Attack” stresses the use knowledge in the wage of war. In the book, “if you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles”. A leader must know both strength and weakness of his team and that of his competition. Winning is not about the size or the bulk of resources but in properly laying out these resources. Alliances from outsiders can be made to strengthen existing weakness.

The fourth chapter “Tactical disposition” displays the importance of knowing the core strengths and being able to position these strengths against competing threats and adversities.
