Animatronics Description: Animatronics is a multi-disciplinary field that integrates various aspects of anatomy, robotics, mechatronics and puppetry to provide inanimate objects with lifelike qualities. An illusion of realism can be produced by combining aspects of the aforementioned disciplines to create a system looks and functions like a human, animal, or creature of fantasy. Many tremendous animatronics have been created over the years. However, there is an opportunity to employ modern technologies and techniques to speed development times and reduce cost. In particular, we have been working to explore techniques of modular design and rapid prototyping for developing animatronic facial features. Animatronics is the use of electronics and robotics in mechanised puppets to simulate life. Animatronics are mainly used in moviemaking, but also in theme parks and other forms of entertainment. Its main advantages to CGI and stop motion is that it is not a simulation of reality, but are physical objects moving in real time in front of the camera. The technology behind animatronics has become more advanced and sophisticated over the years, making the puppets even more realistic and lifelike. Garner Holt Productions, Inc. of San Bernardino, California; UCFab International, LLC of Apopka, Florida; Sally Corporation in Jacksonville, Florida; and Lifeformations of Bowling Green, Ohio are among the leaders in manufacturing animatronics for the theme park industry as well as for museums, restaurants, retail establishments and many other themed environments. Animatronics for film and television productions are used to perform action on camera in situations where the action involves creatures that do not exist, the action is too risky or costly to use real actors or animals, or the action could never be obtained with a living person or animal. The application of animatronics today includes computer controlled as well as radio and manually controlled devices. The actuation of specific movements can be obtained with electric motors, pneumatic cylinders, hydraulic cylinders and cable driven mechanisms. The type of mechanism employed is dictated by the character parameters, specific movement requirements and the project constraints. The technology has advanced to the point that animatronic puppets can be made indiscernible from their living counterparts. Animatronics is to use electronics and robotics in automated, magically moving puppets to make them appear to be alive. It is normally used in moviemaking, but also in theme parks and other forms of getting out of boredom. The device must not suggest anything that is inappropriate by language, sound or movements. Evaluation is based on performance, device artisanship, and documentation of design efforts. PURPOSE Work as part of a team to demonstrate knowledge of mechanical and control systems by designing, fabricating, and controlling an animatronics device that will communicate, entertain, inform, demonstrate andor illustrate a topic, idea, subject or concept. Sound, lights and surrounding environment are to accompany the device. Animatronics is a type of special effects which involves building mechanized creatures like dinosaurs, imaginary animals, and others. Initially, the concept was developed for Disney Studios, which used a giant squid in the 1954 film version 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The name “animatronics” is used to refer to generic animatronic creations made by other film studios, while Disney has copyrighted “audio-animatronics” to refer to their creature creations. In combination with other special effects, animatronics can lend a level of reality and texture to a film that computer animation does not provide. In addition to using animatronics in film, Disney also uses it on their resort properties: the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland featured animatronic birds when the technology was still relatively new. Many Disney rides today have complex animatronic people and animals to entertain guests, and animatronics have also become widespread at other amusement parks around the world. As rides are renovated, better animatronic technology is added to them to create a more convincing experience for guests. Disney pioneered animatronics technology, but other film companies have added nuances of construction and programming, and the technology is constantly improving. Very basic animatronic creatures may have a few simple movements and a sound recording, but more complex ones can be remotely controlled or programmed to perform a specific set of actions. Engineers who work with animatronics are also striving to make the technology seem more lifelike with the addition of highly flexible joints, realistic skin, and meticulous special effects. For a major film, a large number of animatronic creatures might have to be built, a process which can take over a year. An animatronic creation starts with a sketch on paper. Designers figure out what the animal will look like, and create engineering drawings which are used to build a scale model called a maquette. If the maquette satisfies the team, they work on a full scale model, fabricating moving parts and electronic controls before covering the creature in realistic skin which is textured and painted. Computer animation is used much more than animatronics in movies today, because it is more cost efficient and takes less time. Some film studios still use animatronics for a variety of purposes, and many companies specialize in creating animatronics for film and amusement park clients. Junior robotics students also sometimes work on basic animatronics projects as part of their educational experience, and some people enjoy using animatronic decorations for holidays like Christmas, when homes are bedecked inside and out. FUTURE OF ANIMATRONICS: It can be speculated that animatronics will not be a large player in the future of cinematicspecial effects and theme parks. Because of the growing ease and versatility of computer graphics, animatronics are being used less and less to render life-like fantasy creatures inmovies. It is much less expensive to create a digital version of imaginary monsters, then to build them in a life-like size. The other main use for animatronics, themeparks, has also seena decline in the need for mechanized puppets. Newer theme parks are built around attractionssuch as roller-coasters and the importance of visual stimulation such as animatronic figureshas been downplayed in favor of the thrill of an adrenaline rush. Furthermore, the initial wow-factor which applied to animatronics when the Enchanted Tiki Room has worn off because of an audience used to seeing many the technological marvels on television and through theInternet. The relay sent a pulse of energy (electricity) to the figure's mechanism which would causea pneumatic valve to operate, which resulted in the action, like the opening of a bird's beak. Eachaction (e.g., opening of the mouth) had a neutral position, otherwise known as the "naturalresting position" (e.g., in the case of the Tiki bird it would be for the mouth to be closed). Whenthere was no pulse of energy forthcoming, the action would be in, or return to, the natural resting position.This digitaltone-reed system used pneumatic valves exclusively--that is, everything wasoperated by air pressure. Audio-Animatr! onics' movements that were operated with this systemhad two limitations. First, the movement had to be simple--on or off. (e.g., The open and shut beak of a Tiki bird or the blink of an eye, as compared to the many different positions of raisingand lowering an arm.) Second, the movements couldn't require much force or power. (e.g., Theenergy needed to open a Tiki Bird's beak could easily be obtained by using air pressure, but inthe case of lifting an arm, the pneumatic system didn't provide enough power to accomplish thelift.)In addition to the digital programming of the Tiki show, the Fair shows required analog programming. This new "analog system" involved the use of voltage regulation. The tone would be on constantly throughout the show, and the voltage would be varied to create the movementof the figure. This "varied voltage" signal was sent to what was referred to as the "black box."The black boxes had the electronic equipment that would receive the signal an! d then activate the pneumatic and hydraulic valves that moved ! the perf orming figures. The use of hydraulicsallowed for a substantial increase in power, which was needed for the more unwieldy anddemanding movements. (Hydraulics were used exclusively with the analog system, and pneumatics were used only with the tone-reeddigital system.)There were two basic ways of programming a figure. The first used two different methods of controlling the voltage regulation. One was a joystick-like device called a transducer, and the other device was a potentiometer (an instrument for measuring an unknown voltage or potentialdifference by comparison to a standard voltage--like the volume control knob on a radio or television receiver). If this method was used, when a figure was ready to be programmed, eachindividual action--one at a time-- would be refined, rehearsed, and then recorded. For instance,the programmer, through the use of the potentiometer or transducer, would repeatedly rehearsethe gesture of lifting the arm, until it was ready for a "take." What is animatronics?
