This assignment will look at the operational management of two companies - BMIbaby and Elm Surgery, will compare and contrast the two models and seek to place them within a theory of management practice.
The author works in an NHS organization and has chosen the Elm Surgery case study as a way of exploring links between the effective operations management of a public sector and private sector organizations. At face value there appears to be no immediate link between an organization concerned with patient welfare and one whose primary focus is profit maximization. However the author is keen to understand the common business processes underpinning each organization as a way of identifying the core elements of good operational management.

BMI is a low cost airline company that flies from ten UK airports to a number European destinations. The airports are based mainly in the ???? of England. The company flies only Boeing 737 aircraft the average age of which is 14.5 years (ref). The company was established in 2002 and was previously known as British Midland. The reason the company changed to BMIBaby was ????. The experience of running British Midland informed the operations management of BMIBaby.
The company began with two aircraft in March 2002 with flights between East Midlands airport and Malaga (Spain). The company saw a rapid expansion to a fleet of twenty one aircraft by 2005. As a result of the global economic downturn and sharp increase in fuel prices the travel market contracted sharply and the fleet was reduced to 14 by 2010. The company employs approximately ?? staff. With approximately 10% being pilots, 40% cabin crew and 20% managers.
The nature of the business is short haul flights to European destinations. These are mainly holiday destinations with a limited number of flights to business centers such as Bonn and Frankfurt. The business model is low cost air travel marketed mainly at the business traveler/holiday maker. The company motto is “ ???????” which emphasizes this point.
An element of the operational management strategy for the company is that customers have choice in the product they purchase and includes a range of extra options in a “buy-on-board” programme that includes sandwiches, drinks, scratch and toys.
