Company Profile: Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. – Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters
With annual revenue of $405 billion, Wal-Mart is considered the largest in the retail sales industry and in the United States (Walmartstores.com:About Us). The company opened the first stores in 1962 in Rogers Arkansas and was based on the 3 basic beliefs Mr. Sam established which are, respect for the individual, service to customers and strive for excellence (Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.--Company History). They employ 1,500,000+ associates in various positions and have more than 9,759 branch offices that extend to 28 different countries (Walmartstores.com:About Us). The retail giant towers over its nearest competition with three times the revenues of the world’s number two retailer, France’s Carrefour SA (Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.--Company History). Wal-Mart serves customers and members more than 200 million times per week between all locations. They are ranked in the top ten among retailers in Fortune Magazine’s 2010 Most Admired Companies survey (Walmartstores.com:About Us).

Observations:
At Wal-Mart, it is believed that business wins when everyone matters, and that the true strength of diversity is unleashed when each associate is encouraged to reach their full potential. Diversity then becomes the foundation for an inclusive, sustainable business that embraces and respects differences, develops associates, serves customers partners with the community and builds an inclusive supplier base. There is a long history of promoting within at Wal-Mart and for advancing the careers of dedicated associates. Nationally, nearly 70 percent of store management started as hourly associates.
