Introduction
In the 1970’s Geert Hofstede a Dutch researcher developed a most widely used study about identification and measurement of the dimensions or attribute of cultures. His approach to analyse the cultures in different dimensions is one of the most referred yet criticized sources in cross cultural management. Sources in management Hofstede model posited five dimensions which are largely independent from each other and are widely characterizing national culture of the country in terms of its average distinctive style and beliefs and values. Hofstede notes that national culture is the dominant program, which overrides in a country. His findings are based upon response of 72,000 IBM employees and managers in over 50 countries. (Huettinger, 2008) . Hofstede cultural dimensions are:
Power distance
Uncertainty avoidance
Individualism/collectivism
Masculinity/Femininity
Long term orientation
Knowing these five dimensions of Hofstede theory we will give all of you the knowledge and effective understanding of the culture of India.

Power distance
Power distance can be defined as “the extent to which the less powerful members of
Institutions and organizations within a country expect and accept that power is distributed unequally.”( Migliore, 2009). Power distance shows the extent to which the less powerful members of the society accept that there is unequal distribution of the power. A high power culture indicates individuals are perceived higher overall ranks and enjoy the power which is not opened to be questioned and virtually unattainable by those who are of lower ranks. These high power societies are more likely to follow a caste system that does not allow certain openness or mobility to the people while a low power distance does .not stress between the people’s wealth and power.
The Hofstede analytical thinking for India suggests that it ranks highest in terms of unequal power distribution and is suggested as a large power distance cultural society while the other cultural measures are relatively moderate. India’s power distance (PDI) score was comparatively very high with a ranking of 77 compared to the world average of 56.5 (www.geert-hofstede.com) . Societies which have higher power distance choose a reasonable dispersion of power compared to low power distribution. The Indian society is stratified because of some factors like the caste system and religious and philosophies also influence in the acceptance of higher and lower power distance.( Messner, 2009)
Uncertainty avoidance
Uncertainty avoidance refers to a degree to which people in a country prefer an organised or a disorganised situation. It also focuses on the level of tolerance for uncertainty within the society. High uncertainty avoidance countries are bound to be rule-oriented. There are rules and laws to control and avoid the uncertainty.
