I decided to expand this question because the subject is really interesting for me and I didn’t completely understand the reasons of the popularity of tabloids. An introduction to tabloids

Newspapers are traditionally categorized into two types in the United Kingdom. Broadsheets which are larger in size and are seen as being more intellectual and upmarket; and tabloids which are smaller in size and seen as being more downmarket than broadsheets, containing more stories about celebrities or gossip.
Tabloids subdivided onto 2 groups themselves. Countrywide spread like Metro, The Sun and The Daily Express and regional ones such as The Argus in Brighton & Hove and The Star in Sheffield.
The Daily Mirror has been the first tabloid ever published and this happened in 1903. The Sun, The Daily Mail, The Mirror and The Daily Express are the most popular yellow press. For instance, the circulation of The Sun is 3149000 copies per day, The Daily Mail sells on average 2,39 million units a day comparing to The Times, one of the most famous broadsheet whose number of copies reaches just 664000 a day.

The reasons of popularity

There are several obvious causes which further the high demand for tabloids. I would like to list it here:
• As its known, tabloids have a special format which is more convenient and comfortable to read and hold. Different places with limit space like busy underground require such size of newspaper that doesn’t disturb other passengers and allows reading in relaxed position. The width of tabloids in not opened position is twice smaller than broadsheet has. Some reputable press such as The Times and The Independent have already admitted that tabloid sized papers are more attractive to readers and switched to a smaller size, preferring to call themselves compact rather than be stigmatized by the tabloid label.
• In the century of capitalism, price of selling product plays one of the major roles in the choice of customer. Looking at the value of tabloids and broadsheets, prices are fluctuating a lot. For instance, The Sun costs 30p whereas the price of The Financial Times is 2 pounds. Comparing these figures, it’s clear that not everyone could afford to buy the latter one. Thereby, by charging such prices newspapers determine the circle of their readers. Naturally, the United Kingdom’s working and middle classes constitute the major part of whole population and it’s easy to guess which price of given products they would prefer.
