Can you manage your Manager

If you have ever had a job and wondered how you could be more successful, I have some tips to give you that can improve your skills and give you a more pleasant work environment. These skills combined make up the skill of “managing up”. Managing up is one of the most important skills to be successful in professional life. Unfortunately, most people are not aware of the importance of managing up, what it means, how to be successful at it, and were not taught how to manage the ones who manage them. So what are some things you can do? The few things I feel are most important are communication, being honest and trustworthy, setting realistic expectations, requesting feedback, being ambitious, and providing solutions. So what do these things mean to manage up and how can you use them effectively? I will share some of my ideas and information to help you per-fect your skills, increase your productivity and make your work environment more desirable.

The first thing I want to talk about is communication. In my opinion, this is the single most important skill to per-fect in the business field. Communication by definition is the exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another. To be effective the receiver of the communication occurs only if the receiver understands what the sender intended the message to be. Rather it is at work, home, school, the grocery store or at the local gym, communication is all around us. It is important that you know how your boss likes to communicate rather it be in person, given updates in meetings or via e-mail. It is important to know these details because every manager is different. Some want to know every little detail on a daily basis, while others don’t want you to bother them unless there is a situation that needs their immediate attention or help. Some things you can do to initiate conversations are saying good morning, have a good night, ask how they are doing or just complement something you like about what they are wearing that day. This will get the attention of your manager and you will be “visible” to them.
In communication it is also important to be honest and trustworthy. It is important for you to maintain trust between you and your boss. If they depend on the information you provide them, and you give them reason to doubt you, it is hard to gain that trust back. In business you should ...
