The statement above is supported by many factors which are used to create a mission statement. Many mission statements do not support the actions of the business, some may focus on customers or employees and may not consider others involved in the business such as the stakeholders. The mission statement used for a business can also be too vague, it tends to focus on one aspect of what they would like to achieve rather than looking at corporate objectives of the business to give an understandable overview of the business’s aims. What needs to be considered in the statement above is the nature of the business. A business that operates a clothes shop or a food shop may have more complex objectives such as ensuring the quality of all clothes products are kept at a certain standard. It is important that the mission statement has a thorough detailed description on what its objectives are and how they are likely to achieve them, some statements state the obvious which may be similar to competitors. The risk of obvious statements is that customers may not feel that what a certain business is providing is more distinctive or of better value than its competitors. Senior management of a company may not support a mission statement if it doesn’t provide a true and fair view of the company. This could cause conflict between employees in the business if they feel they are giving a false representation of what a company stands for. All these factors are able to demonstrate that a mission statement has little relevance to the rest of the business as it is too brief to show all the activities of the business.
