The purpose of this essay is analysing how the individual personality has influence on teamwork performance. The Big Five traits and Emotional Intelligence were utilised when analyzing.

“A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, set of performance goals, and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.” (Katzenbach and Smith, 2005, p.156). Teamwork performance can be affected by many factors, such as individual-level factor, team size, and environment (Barrick, Stewart, Neubert and Mount, 1998). This essay only concentrated on individual personality of a team member. The purpose of this essay is analysing how the individual personality has influence on teamwork performance. The Big Five traits and Emotional Intelligence were utilised when analyzing.

Most research considering the impact of personality on work performance is based on the Big Five, which includes Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism (Wilson, 2010). According to Digman, (1990) and Neuman, Wagner and Christiansen( 1999), a team member who has Openness personality is active and curious, preferring to explore new things, this kind of people are creative and imaginative, comparing with other personalities, they can realise their feeling better. Conscientiousness individuals are hardworking, striving self-discipline, they act dutifully, prefer to plan and organised, and then follow the schedule, moreover, focusing on how to complete task. Extraversion individuals are generally confidential and enthusiastic, this kind of outgoing people feel comfortable when they around people, which make them easier to make a good interpersonal relationship with others. Agreeableness individuals are modesty and generous, they are good at cooperating with others, compromise to compliance others’ opinion, they are considerate other people. Neuroticism individuals are often emotional, they worry and feel insecure about things, vulnerable to stress, and they are impulsive and easy to be anxious.

The Big Five traits have different influence on work performance, now it has divided to two positions: team member and team leader. As a role of a team member: When openness individuals are working with other people, they always have a great idea or have a wonderful imagination, they are also contributing on problem solving. These people can bring new thoughts into the team, which can increase team’s vitality. In terms of these, openness individuals are welcomed by other team members. However, some members prefer a conventional way, for example, people who have conscientiousness traits, they maybe feel difficult to understand openness individuals’ idea, therefore, they might disagree with the idea. Conscientiousness members are regarded as reliable members in the team, they plan and prepare the task, which give the team a good direction to achieve the goal. Their hard working can encourage other team members to work together (Mohammed and Angell, 2003).
