PART 1

PROJECT OBJECTIVES AND OVERALL APPROACH


1.0 INTRODUCTION

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants [ACCA] in partnership with Oxford Brookes University [OBU], awards a Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Applied Accounting to ACCA students (who opted into the degree) after the successful completion of the fundamental levels of ACCA examinations. Students are however required to complete a Research and Analysis Project in order to qualify for the degree awarded by OBU.

This Research and Analysis Report is written in compliance with the requirements for the purpose of the degree and in accordance with the Research and Analysis Project Guidelines contained in ACCA website- www.accaglobal.com

Having gone through the Research and Analysis Project Guidelines downloaded from ACCA website and the Oxford Brookes University/ACCA Approved Text (Success in Your Research and Analysis Project by BPP), I choose to research on the project Topic Number 6:
“The key factors or indicators in the motivation of employees in an organization” using Allied Associates & Co (Chartered Accountants) as a case study.


1.1 Overview of Employees motivation

In many parts of the world there is a growing shortage of trained finance staff, and organizations are facing real difficulties in recruitment (Murray, 2008). It is a truism that the most influential resource in an organization is its people (BPP Paper P5, 2007).

2.2.2 Secondary sources



The secondary sources used to obtain data as mentioned earlier constitute mainly textbooks (from Libraries, personal, friends etc), newspapers, journals, in-house publications, Internet amongst others.



Libraries

I visited several Libraries in search of books relevant to my research topic, management issues, employees’ behavior and research techniques generally.

Some of the Libraries visited include:

Bariga Local Government Area public library, Bariga, Lagos

Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), members library, Victoria Island, Lagos

Personal mini-Library maintained by the Partners of BBc, etc

My personal library



I derived several benefits from some of the books collected and reviewed from the above libraries.



Other publications

I collected and reviewed several articles and publications some of which includes:

The Nigerian Accountants (official publication of ICAN for members),

ACCA Student Accountant

Tick Magazines (official publication of BBc for staff,client etc)

Human Resources Management (official publication of Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria)

Various newspapers, magazines etc



Internet

I used the internet facilities at work place and sometimes at public internet café to obtain information relating to motivation and on research issues generally. The experiences were quite challenging, educating and interesting.





Limitations of information gathering



The research and gathering of information went on smoothly. Though there were some few limitations, they were not material to the overall approach and result of the research.



Some of the limitations to the information gathering are stated below:



The public libraries are usually opened during the working hours and researchers were not allowed to go home with the books. Based on the fact that I’m usually busy with my official duties this limited to an extent the research.

Some of the staff did not return their questionnaire.

During the interview and observation of staff, their responses and actions may not be fully in line with their intention.



Ethical issues



Prior to my commencement of the Research and Analysis Project, I held useful discussion with the Managing Partner of the Firm informing him of the research project topic and my intention to use the Firm (Allied Associates & Co) as my choice of organization.



Based on my discussions and consultations with the Partners and staff, there are no ethical issues that will have an impact on the report.



Explanation of the business techniques used



I researched in details several motivation theories and tried to relate them to our work environment. This was made possible by the reading of various textbooks, magazines, professional articles, in-house journals and browsing the internet. These were the secondary source used in the research.



For my primary sources I used various techniques such as questionnaire, Interview, observation, interactions amongst others in order to achieve the objective of the report.
