This article is about the Raisin System by Proteus Biomedical that monitors pill taking and its effects to the body. It has been developed because a lot of people do not take their medication as prescribed. By tracking the drug’s effect on patients, individual prescriptions that are more effective could be developed. Each pill would contain an IEM (ingestible event marker) which consists of a tiny microchip with a thin-film battery, which is non toxic. A high-frequency electrical current is sent by IEM once the pill is swallowed. It goes through the body’s tissues and provides the identity of the pill. The receiver on the patch, which also has sensors that monitor physiological parameters, picks up the electrical current.
At present, biophysical parameters, measured on top of the skin, are the main focus. Once the data is received, it’s used to review the suitability of dosage or medication prescribed. According to the Raisin system on-and in-body sensors compare pill taking and the body’s physiological responses.
There are privacy worries which are mitigated by using safety measures to protect the data and transmitting the signal electrically through the skin’s tissues and not by radio. This method of transmitting means that interference from other patients using the system is not a problem.
Sharing of information is one of the ideas to improve community support: informing the relatives if the patient misses his dose. Personal contact with contagious patients is no longer required to ensure they have taken their medication.
